Research shows that online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is just as effective as face-to- face CBT with the added benefit of increased flexibility i.e. you can be in the comfort of your own home or any location at a time to fit in with your other commitments.
Within the first few sessions you should have an idea if we are a good match. If you don't feel like it’s a good match- that’s okay. I will be happy to make recommendations to another therapist that might be helpful
I used a clinical management software via Write Upp, this means when you book sessions via my website you will be sent a link to your email address so that you can access a video call with me. The software is ISO27001 certified and GDPR compliant, so you do not need to worry about security and data protection issues. The software is free and simple to use, and they all allow for the delivery of effective therapy in a comfortable and safe environment convenient for you.
The CBT process works in exactly the same way as face-to-face therapy with CBT materials and exercises shared using video connection. You will require access to the internet and access to a camera (this usually comes as standard on modern mobile phone devices, electronic tablets, and laptops). I will send you an email containing a calendar invite with a link to your chosen platform. All you need to do is click on this link and it takes you straight through to the video call. With the email address that you provide, I will send weekly resources and agreed home tasks via email.
It is important to remember that each person will have different needs, some people only require a few sessions, whilst others benefit from more. I typically recommend an average of 6 to 10 CBT sessions. We would always agree on the number of sessions that might be helpful after our initial assessment, and we would regularly review this to see if more or less sessions might be useful to you.
One session per week is typical but I am happy to also offer bi-weekly if required. This frequency can help to build a therapeutic relationship and gain traction in treatment.
Typically sessions last for 50-60 minutes.
If you decide to go ahead with therapy with myself, our first one or two sessions would form our assessment where we will discuss the areas in your life where you are struggling and feel stuck. We will discuss what you would like to be different in your life, form a shared understanding of what is maintaining your difficulties and think of ways forward to help you achieve agreed treatment goals.
Everything we discuss in therapy is confidential. However, if I believed that you or someone else was at risk of harm, I would be required to share that information with appropriate people or services such as your GP, CAMHS, Police or Social Services to ensure that you get the most appropriate support at that time. Prior to suspending confidentiality, I would always work with you to develop a Safety Plan together.
At the end of therapy, together we will look at managing setbacks and planning for closure via a relapse prevention session. This will allow you to create a personalised wellbeing plan to help you stay well and prevent future setbacks.
Once a session has been booked into my online system, you will receive two automated emails. The first email is a confirmation of the date/time of session, the second email is a digital invoice. I ask for invoices to be paid before the session occurs.
